At dusk, one of the original United Aircraft TurboTrains running as Penn Central train 3002 between New York and Boston glides across the Mystic River swing bridge on the Connecticut coast. These pioneers of North American high speed rail were fun to ride but proved to be mechanically unreliable.

In its first summer of revenue service, a United Aircraft TurboTrain running as Penn Central train 3002 between New York and Boston speeds through the Pine Orchard section of Branford, CT, leaving behind the scent of jet fuel. This was the original three-car configuration of these trains, which would later be lengthened to increase capacity.

Just a few months into revenue service and doing what it was built to do, a United Aircraft TurboTrain races through Milford, CT, on its way from New York to Boston. At the time the Turbos covered one round trip a day and commanded a premium fare. For railfans, the mini-domes at each end provided a unique view that was worth the extra cost.
