Canadian National train 65, the afternoon Rapido between Montreal and Toronto, speeds west near Coteau, Quebec, behind an A-B set of FP9 cab units. The morning and afternoon Rapidos were CN’s premier trains on this route, running nonstop except for suburban stops outside Montreal and Toronto.

The 2880-mile trip from Montreal to Vancouver will be a few hundred feet longer this time as Canadian Pacific train #1, the westbound Canadian, negotiates temporary trackage around a bridge replacement project at Dorion, Quebec. The usual pair of candy-striped FP9s are in charge of the classic consist.

Grand Trunk Western eastbound #158, the “Maple Leaf” to Toronto, left Dearborn Street Station a few minutes ago and now approaches the N&W (ex-Wabash route to St. Louis) crossing at “Ashburn.” A pair of steam generator equipped GP9’s (4931-4920) are the normal power for GTW passenger trains, and they’re running long-hood-forward as all the early hood units in the CN family were intended to do.
