Rock Island, Southern Pacific Golden State sleepers on Pennsylvania Admiral at Horseshoe Curve
The Admiral is two hours late, according to the caption of this photo from Don Ball, Jr.’s Pennsylvania Railroad 1940s-1950s. The sleepers from the Golden State are coming through from L.A. From the late 40s until the mid-50s transcontinental sleepers, switched from train to train in Chicago, operated from New York and Washington to L.A. and San Francisco.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9926A on the second Train # 10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr at Aurora, Illinois on December 19, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1947 (c/n 4433) on EMD Order E792A, retired in September 1969 and dismantled in December 1969, it is seen here heading the second section of Train # 10. Behind the motors appears to be a Southern Pacific car, most likely a sleeper. The first section would have most of the normal Denver Zephyr consist, including the baggage cars and dormitory car. The second section would need a stand-in dorm car for the train crew (porters and dining car staff), and the SP car likely was filling in.

Prior to the west coast being slammed by storms in early 2017, the ex-Southern Pacific (SP) coast line looked fairly tranquil in scenes such as this one brought to you just north of Gaviota. Looking down the two-tone grey paint and white lines of the 1950-built, ex-Union Pacific chair car “Pacific Trail,” with a little imagination one can see a brightly colored GS-4 on the head-end leading a spotless train of stainless steel orange and red cars through the twists and curves along the coast as Train No. 99, the northbound Daylight, heads toward its next stop of Surf. While the Daylight might be hard to imagine, Amtrak’s horizon transit with the veteran’s painted cabbage and a pair of private cars isn’t too shabby.
