Southbound Rock Island Train No. 17, THE PLAINSMAN, makes a station stop at Mason City, Iowa, on July 19, 1969, behind units 660 and 617. Nos. 17 and 18 operated between the Twin Cities and Kansas City and were a remnant of the old TWIN STAR ROCKET (Twin Cities to Houston).

Here is the first image of a train my wife has ever taken. In fact this is the first of two images of trains she has taken, and I’m in both of the pictures! Here we are at Dayton’s Bluff in St. Paul, MN on 07-23-1968 photographing Rock Island’s Plainsman which will be terminated on 07-25-1969. EMD E7 number 636 didn’t last much longer.

This is RI #17, The Plainsman, in Iowa Falls, IA, during July 1968. This train usually met #18 either north or south of town so we usually saw both. The lighting wasn’t good for the northbound. That’s a UP baggage car behind the E7B. I’ve seen GN and SP baggage cars to these trains too.

Rock Island’s southbound “Plainsman” #17 from Minneapolis to Kansas City. The Twin Cities-KC mainline crosses the Chicago-Omaha mainline at Short Line Tower, east of the Des Moines depot, so it must either head in and back out or it must back in and head out. Evidently it’s the first choice in effect here as it arrives at the station behind an FA1, E8 (133….) to pick up passengers, and anyone who wants to connect off of #7. The FA1 is rebuilt with an EMD engine and rides on EMD trucks, still showing some silver. It’s also not normal passenger power, being without a steam generator. Maybe the E-unit lost power and the FA1 was taken from a passing freight while the steam generator from the E-unit kept passengers warm.
