Downers Grove, IL. 1938 or 1939. Photo by H. W. “Bill” Barber. Photo shot with a Kodak 828 Bantam Special. The train was one of two built by Budd in 1936 and was the second Twin Cities Zephyr, The first two trains were three car sets built by Budd in 1935; 9901 and 9901. As built, it was a seven car articulated train. The carbody of the power unit, 9904 or 9905 was also built by Budd and equipped with two EMC-GM (later EMD-GM) V12- 201A engines driving a GE generator powering two GE traction motors. The train is westbound. Each of the two trains made a round trip between Chicago and Minneapolis each day. The trains remained in this service until until 1947 when they were replaced by new non articulated vista dome Budd built trains. The cars from this train were rebuilt and assigned as the Nebraska Zephyr operating into the late 1960s. Collection of W. R. Barber scans-151218-006

St. Paul Union Depot GE center cab no. 441 shuffles Burlington’s Silver Express baggage car on the east leads to St. Paul Union Depot on a sunny April 1970 morning. This was during the brief period when BN, formed a month earlier, was in the non-Amtrak passenger business. That would continue for another year until Amtrak took over most US passenger operations, radically adjusting service to places like the Twin Cities.
