A bloody nose for a bloody nose. Amtrak F7A No. 104 (formerly BN 9780; originally NP 6511A) went to early retirement after hitting a truck loaded with 1300 turkeys in northwestern Minnesota on Amtrak’s Empire Builder in October 1973. This shot was taken at Harrison St., Minneapolis not long after the incident with feathers still frozen to the nose. The unit was retired, moved to Dale St., St. Paul for storage and later traded to EMD for new Amtrak power. It was still in storage in St. Paul in early 1975.

Amtrak’s Empire Builder slows for a stop at North La Crosse, WI behind a former CBQ/BN E8A, a pair of X-GN Fs, and a former NP F. Prior to May 1971, the E unit was a common visitor to La Crosse, but typically handled Zephyrs, Empire Builders and North Coast Limiteds on Burlington trackage which crossed these Milwaukee Road tracks just east of here at Grand Junction. A CNW line also crossed there. Amtrak moved the remaining Chicago-Twin Cities trains to the Milwaukee Road to serve more cities.

Amtrak’s San Francisco Zephyr just departed Chicago Union Station for its overnight run with an early Amtrak rainbow of cars and locos on October 14, 1972. The lead E8A (BN 9934) was built as CB&Q 9941B and became AMTK 333. This day the Zephyr had two round-end observation dome cars looking like they were Twin City Zephyr cars.
