Two weeks before Day One of Amtrak, the Burlington’s Denver Zephyr is seen highballing through Eola, IL at the Eola Road crossing on the Q’s East End. A pair of E7s leads this train on the overnight dash to Denver, and one day closer to this train’s final performance.

It’s August 19, 1970 and this yet to be re-numbered Q E7A and two sisters are in charge of BN train #1, the w/b DZ at Mendota, IL. The rear unit is the 9920 which IIRC was the only E7A painted this way. 9931-B will become the 9912.

A bloody nose for a bloody nose. Amtrak F7A No. 104 (formerly BN 9780; originally NP 6511A) went to early retirement after hitting a truck loaded with 1300 turkeys in northwestern Minnesota on Amtrak’s Empire Builder in October 1973. This shot was taken at Harrison St., Minneapolis not long after the incident with feathers still frozen to the nose. The unit was retired, moved to Dale St., St. Paul for storage and later traded to EMD for new Amtrak power. It was still in storage in St. Paul in early 1975.

Amtrak’s Empire Builder slows for a stop at North La Crosse, WI behind a former CBQ/BN E8A, a pair of X-GN Fs, and a former NP F. Prior to May 1971, the E unit was a common visitor to La Crosse, but typically handled Zephyrs, Empire Builders and North Coast Limiteds on Burlington trackage which crossed these Milwaukee Road tracks just east of here at Grand Junction. A CNW line also crossed there. Amtrak moved the remaining Chicago-Twin Cities trains to the Milwaukee Road to serve more cities.
