Two of the four slant-nosed E6s that were delivered to the Illinois Central in 1941 lasted until the coming of Amtrak, and they earned premier assignments until the end. IC E6s 4001 and 4003, sandwiched by an E8B, paused at Homewood, IL, with the southbound Panama Limited on a summer evening in 1969. Shortly they’ll be doing 90mph on the IC’s raceway.

EMD E8A 4033 heads the Illinois Central’s premier train, the Panama Limited, as it departs Chicago for New Orleans in July 1969. The locomotive was built in 1953 and sold to New Jersey Transit in 1978, becoming its 4258. The transparency is from David V. Leonard. Looks like Hyde Park 55th st.
