Running five hours behind schedule, Amtrak’s Desert Wind train #36 skirts the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake at Lake Point, Utah. A Union Pacific mixed freight train is running parallel to the Desert Wind on the former Western Pacific mainline to California. Busy Interstate 80 is sandwiched between the two about 20 miles west of downtown Salt Lake City. The Desert Wind ran between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City where it connected to the Pioneer from Seattle and the California Zephyr from Oakland to Chicago. Trains #35 and #36 made their final trips on May 10, 1997.
